When you step into Trekroner Church, you enter a space where architecture and art interact closely. The artworks are integrated into the building’s forms and materials, reflecting both the structures of nature and Christian symbolism. The decoration is experienced as a unified narrative where space and art are inseparably connected.

The Church Building – the Beating Heart of Trekroner

The church’s floor plan is inspired by the round shapes of nature, and there are almost no straight lines in the building. Seen from above, its form resembles a human heart, underlining the church’s role as a vibrant and unifying centre of the neighbourhood.

An Artistic Whole

Trekroner Church is decorated with art that is designed as part of the space itself rather than hanging on the walls. The main door is covered in palladium, creating a clear transition between the outer and inner space. An agate window with thin slices of gemstone filters the light and creates a striking focal point in the church.

The Altar and the Symbolism of the Cross

The altar is made of raw oak and shaped like outstretched hands, drawing attention to the Eucharist. Above the altar hangs a perforated cross; its openings refer to the constellation Cygnus (the Northern Cross), linking the church space to patterns and symbols found in nature.

The Font and Details

The baptismal font is made of deep-blue sodalite stone and plays with colours and shapes that refer to the elements of water, spirit, and earth. The bronze baptismal basin is decorated with the lines of a hand and the fish – an early Christian symbol – giving the baptism ceremony a sensory and contemporary expression.

Space and Materials

The church floor is laid with pentagonal bricks in a pattern that supports the spatial design language. The choice of materials, light, and acoustics is balanced so that music, speech, and silence all find space, giving the church a calm and contemplative atmosphere.

Tip

After visiting Trekroner Church, you can take a peaceful walk through the Trekroner area, where paths connect residential areas, green spaces, and Roskilde University – a well-known Danish institution for education and research. The walk offers a contrast between modern urban life, open landscapes, and distant views towards Roskilde Fjord.
