Hike - Around Nissum Fjord
Nissum Fjord is a unique coastal lagoon along the west coast of Jutland. Only a narrow isthmus with wild sand dunes and the sluice gate at Thorsminde separates the calm waters of the fjord from the raw North Sea. Here, magnificent nature, rich birdlife, and local cultural history merge.

As you move along the fjord, you will experience the flat, shallow fjord meadows, which are a true paradise for migratory birds. Guests driving along the dunes on the coastal road experience the fjord and the meadows as a vast, often bird-rich area. If you stop at the small, idyllic fjord harbors or take a trip with the locals, the diverse nature and cultural landscape that characterizes Naturpark Nissum Fjord all the way around will open up to you.
There are 3 routes around Nissum Fjord, all of which operate as loops. Therefore, you always finish at the same place you started. The official starting and parking points are:
Blue route (Hiking trail by Indfjorden) | 14.7 km:
- Start and finish: South of Bøvlingbjerg (e.g., at Bøvling Harbor or Gørding - fjord house and bird tower).
- Parking: Free marked parking spaces close to Indfjorden and at Gørding Bird Tower.
Red route (Nissum Fjord Hiking Trail - Large route) | 70.9 km:
- Start and finish: The harbor town of Thorsminde (by the sluice/North Sea). The route leads you all the way around the fjord and through all the small, local fjord harbors.
- Parking: Large, free parking lots centrally in Thorsminde, e.g., at Strandingsmuseum St. George or near Bjerghuse.
Yellow route (Bicycle path) | 84.5 km:

Practical information for the trip
Accommodation: Along the red hiking route, you will find good opportunities to stay overnight in shelters, at a local nature school, or at campsites, such as Nissum Fjord Camping in Fjand.
Dogs on the trail: The route crosses several enclosures with cattle or horses that maintain the landscape. You are welcome to pass, but your dog must always be kept on a short leash.
Digital maps: You can download the route to your smartphone via the official map guide at Naturpark Nissum Fjord or find inspiration on Udinaturen.dk.
Remember provisions: Since shopping opportunities can be far apart out on the open fjord meadows, it is a good idea to stock up on food and water in the local towns before starting the tour.
Do not miss these highlights along your way:
- Strandingsmuseum St. George in Thorsminde
- The raw and beautiful dune landscapes in Husby Klitplantage
- The rich and unique birdlife in the Felsted Kog wildlife reserve
