Hike - Nature trail on the Bird Island in Thorsminde

At the end of Havnevej by Gammel Havn (Old Harbour) in the authentic coastal town of Thorsminde, you will find the start of this beautiful nature trail. The route stretches over approx. 3 km and brings you close to the raw, unspoiled nature that characterizes the transition between the North Sea and the fjord.

Highlights on the route

• The bird tower with a panoramic view: At the easternmost point of the route, you will find a great bird tower and bird hide. From here, you have an unobstructed view of the protected bird sanctuary in Nissum Fjord Nature Park, where thousands of migratory birds stay all year round. Remember your binoculars!
• The history of the pound net poles: Along the water's edge, you will notice large, cone-shaped structures of wooden poles that resemble tepees or drying sheds. This is living local history. These are the fishermen's pound net poles, stacked on land to dry so they do not rot in the grass when not in use. If you look closely, you can still see the fishermen's personal initials engraved into the wood.
• Authentic harbour atmosphere: The tour starts and ends at the charming Gammel Havn, where you can see the old dinghies and traditional fishing gear by the huts.

• Length: Approximately 3 km (with the option of two shorter alternative loops of approx. 1.3 km).
• Difficulty: Easy. The route is flat with a maximum incline of only 1.8%, making it suitable for most people.
• Surface: Nature trail. Please note that the ground can be soft during wet periods. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
• Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect the rich birdlife in the area.
• Starting point and parking: You can park in the parking lot at the end of Havnevej (approx. 100 meters east of the water treatment plant) at Gammel Havn in Thorsminde.
