Baroque and romance in the shade of old trees

You walk in through an avenue of tall, old trees, and the sound of traffic quickly fades. Hindsgavl Castle Park sits as a green pocket of 40,000 square metres between the castle and the Little Belt, and entry to the park is free, even though the park belongs to Hindsgavl Castle.

The park was laid out around 1750 as a formal baroque garden with symmetrical avenues, terraces and ponds. In the early 1800s it was redesigned in the romantic style, with winding paths and looser planting – a tradition still visible in the landscape today. Several of the old trees date from the original layout, and you can trace both the earlier and the later garden as you move through the park.

From the romantic period, the tea pavilion “Sorgenfri” and the Hermitage remain. The pavilion carries verses written by Hans Christian Andersen, who often visited Hindsgavl. Both stand as possible stops on your walk through the park, telling of a time when manor gardens were meant as places for both reflection and company.

The castle park suits a quiet walk, whether you come alone, with family, or as part of a longer tour along the Little Belt. The terrain is flat and easy to walk.

Food and drink brought from home may not be consumed in the park, and dogs must be kept on a leash.
