The Christmas tree is lit in Grenaa

Experience the atmospheric Christmas tree lighting in Grenaa at the tip of beautiful Djursland, where Santa Claus is awakened, elves play tricks, and the town's beautiful Christmas lights are lit in style.

Christmas tree lighting in Grenaa

As Christmas approaches, locals and visitors alike gather in Grenaa for one of the most traditional and enjoyable events of the year – the lighting of the Christmas tree in the town centre.

Wake up Santa Claus and follow him to the square

As tradition dictates, the party begins at 4.30 p.m. in the courtyard of Museum Østjylland. Here, children and adults eagerly await the awakening of Santa Claus, who has been sleeping since last Christmas. It takes both singing and patience, as he can be a bit of a heavy sleeper.

Accompanied by the FDF Grenaa Brass Band's elf orchestra, which plays atmospheric Christmas tunes, you can follow Santa Claus to the big Christmas tree in the square. But be careful – the cheeky elves are never far away and can get up to all sorts of mischief!

Christmas lights, fire engine and the town's Christmas tree

At around 5 p.m., the festivities culminate when Santa Claus and the mayor together light the big Christmas tree and the town's Christmas lights. All this happens with the help of Beredskab & Sikkerhed's impressive fire engine, which provides a bright ending to the day's magical prelude to December.
