Sunds Sø – heath lake with two bathing areas near Herning
Sunds Sø is one of Denmark’s largest heath lakes. With two bathing spots, a scenic trail and rich nature, it’s a popular destination just north of Herning.
Covering about 127 hectares, Sunds Sø is well suited for swimming thanks to its shallow shores. The lake has two public bathing areas: Strandparken, offering a sandy beach, picnic house, benches, outdoor showers and toilets, and a smaller bathing spot on the east side at Øster Søvej/Ilskovvej with parking and open green space.
A 5.5 km trail circles the lake, ideal for walking and running. The eastern shoreline is protected, preserving access, views and biodiversity. The lake is home to many aquatic plants and bird species.
Sunds Sø is privately owned by a fishermen’s association; fishing requires a permit, and boating is allowed under specific rules to protect the environment. With its mix of bathing, outdoor activities and nature, Sunds Sø is a year-round recreational highlight.
