A Hidden Forest Gem Between Sorø and Ringsted

Southeast of Sorø, where the landscape rolls between moraine hills and deep forest ravines, Alsted Skov stands as one of Central Zealand's best-preserved natural areas. The Trail in Alsted Skov follows a marked route of approximately 8 kilometres through the deciduous forest, offering everything from dense beech woodland to open glades where roe deer are often spotted grazing in the early morning hours.

Alsted Skov lies in Sorø Municipality, just a few kilometres from the small railway town of Fjenneslev, best known for its Romanesque church with lime paintings dating back to the 12th century. The forest hosts a rich birdlife including woodpeckers, jays, and common buzzards circling above the treetops. In autumn, the foliage turns warm shades of gold and rust, and the mushroom season draws foragers to the woodland floor.

The terrain is generally accessible, though some passages are hilly and can be muddy during rainy periods. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, and you should bring water as there are no facilities along the route. Dogs are welcome on a lead, and the trail suits families with children who are accustomed to walking and comfortable with moderately hilly terrain.

Fjenneslev and Surroundings

The starting point at Næstvedvej provides easy access from both Sorø and Ringsted. Fjenneslev Church, just a few minutes by car, is well worth visiting for its unique lime paintings from the era of Valdemar the Great. From here, it is also a short drive to the town of Sorø with Sorø Academy, Sorø Lake, and the ancient abbey church, all worthy of exploration before or after your forest walk.

Heading south, you quickly reach the Suså river valley with opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. To the north lies Fjenneslev Station, from where trains run conveniently to both Ringsted and Slagelse. The area is characterised by a tranquil, rural landscape of fields, small villages, and winding country roads that invite cycling excursions.
