A unique gold pendant discovered in West Jutland has returned home – and is now on display at Holstebro Museum.

The piece is over 1,000 years old and may have been personally gifted by the Byzantine emperor to a Viking serving in his imperial guard.

The pendant features a crescent-shaped gold plate framed with delicate gold beads and bands. Its motif – two birds flanking a tree or plant – may symbolize the Tree of Life.

This treasure is classified as danefæ (a national treasure) and is exceptionally on loan from the National Museum of Denmark to Holstebro Museum.

Such a piece has never been found in Scandinavia before – and only about ten similar examples exist worldwide.
