Discover the geology, industrial history, natural beauty and learn about the many bats that hibernate in the deep mine tunnels.

Whether you like history, nature or adventure, a visit to Mønsted Kalkgruber is unforgettable for the whole family, where you can experience a unique combination of outstanding nature, exciting stories about people, industrial history and bats.

Experiences underground

Adventure through a labyrinth of illuminated mine tunnels where trickling streams and beautiful underground lakes create a magical atmosphere. There are around 4 kilometres of passageways open to visitors, of which around 2 kilometres are illuminated.

Above ground experiences

Mønsted Kalkgruber is more than just the underground tunnels. Above ground, you can visit the old lime works where lime was burned until 1980. Today, the building serves as a museum where you can get an insight into a bygone era of hard labour, hot kilns, dust and historical stories about life in the lime industry.

The area is part of NATURA 2000, a protected nature area. Take a hike on the nature trail, where you can experience impressive sinkholes, limestone pastures and steep slopes. From here you can enjoy the view of the blue-green lake, which was once an open limestone quarry.

The Cafe Kridthuset

After your tour of the mines, you can take a break in the cosy Café Kridthuset. Here you can satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst with a selection of delicious dishes and refreshments. The café is open on holidays and seasonally, so check the opening hours before your visit

The bat playground

Next to the café is the bat playground, where the children can climb and play on the 5 bat species that overwinter in the lime pits.

Dress warmly

The temperature in the limestone quarries is only 8 degrees year-round, so be sure to wear a warm sweater.

Smoking only allowed in designated areas.

The museum is closed for the winter from 1 November 2025 to 27 March 2026. It is closed on 30 May due to the Kalkmineløbet race.
