Madum Lake

Madum Lake is a freshwater lake with exceptionally clear water due to its low level of algae. There are two designated bathing beaches around the lake: one on the eastern shore and one on the western shore. Both are clearly marked. The rest of the shoreline is surrounded by open areas and beautiful pine forest.

With its shallow water and fine sandy bottom, Madum Lake is ideal for families with young children. The water remains very shallow for several metres from the shore before the lakebed drops and the water becomes deep. Madum Lake is a popular destination for locals and visitors from Denmark and abroad.

Facilities and rules

Both designated bathing beaches have good parking facilities and toilet buildings close to the lake.

  • Swimming: Only permitted at the two designated beaches.
  • Paddleboards/SUP: NOT PERMITTED, as Madum Lake is a protected area.
  • Hiking: There are three waymarked routes in the area around Madum Lake and Langmosen. You can find them on the overview map of Rold Forest.

Mysteries and legends of the lake

Madum Lake is said to be the site of mysterious events. From time to time, unexplained lights are reportedly seen above the water, which some believe to be supernatural. According to local folklore, an ancient castle also sank into the depths and still lies at the bottom of the lake. Near the shore, you can also find a huge boulder said to have been hurled there by an angry troll.
