A living ceramics museum with more than 150 years of history
Step into a world of ceramics, craftsmanship and Bornholm traditions at Hjorths Fabrik in Rønne – Bornholm’s oldest ceramics factory dating back to 1862. In the historic factory buildings, traditional craftsmanship is still very much alive, and ceramics are still produced on site to this day.
Throughout the old workshops, by the pottery wheels and kilns, you can experience how clay is transformed into finished pieces, while exhibitions tell the story of the Hjorth family and the development of Bornholm ceramics over the past 150 years. The authentic surroundings and working production make Hjorths Fabrik a special experience for both children and adults who would like to explore an important part of Bornholm’s craft and cultural heritage.
In the museum shop, you will find the factory’s own ceramics, still produced on site, alongside everyday ceramics, classic collections and smaller unique pieces created with respect for the proud craftsmanship traditions that have characterised Hjorths Fabrik for generations.
Introduction to Hjorths Fabrik
If you would like to learn more about the history of the factory and its traditional ceramics production, you can join an introduction to Hjorths Fabrik. Introductions are held every Saturday at 11 am throughout the year, and additionally at 2 pm during June, July and August. Throw your own pottery
During the school holidays, both children and adults can try working with clay themselves at Hjorths Fabrik. Here, you can get hands-on with the traditional craft and experience the historic ceramics production up close in the old factory surroundings.
Hjorths Fabrik offers pottery courses during the Easter, summer and autumn holidays, where the factory’s ceramicists introduce participants to throwing their own pottery. It is a cosy holiday activity for families, couples and creative visitors looking for a different experience on Bornholm. Booking usually opens around two months before the courses begin.
