Hike - Ryde Plantage

Welcome to Ryde Plantage – a hidden natural gem northeast of Holstebro, where nature has reclaimed the land. What began in 1900 as a straight-lined conifer plantation has today transformed into a magical and wild natural forest. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the marked trails through ancient beech woods, raw birch swamps, and historic peat bogs, where you can experience rich wildlife and the deep tranquility of the forest.

The plantation offers two different hiking routes, located in separate areas of the forest, providing two completely different nature experiences.

The Short Walk: Blue Route (1 km)

Perfect for a quick stroll or a pleasant trip with smaller children.

  • Length: 1 km (Loop trail).
  • Time: Approx. 15-20 minutes.
  • Difficulty: Very easy.
  • Highlights: The walk begins in the beautiful, old beech forest and leads you past historic, old peat bogs. Today, these old bogs have turned into idyllic marshes. If you listen closely during the spring months, you might hear the rare moor frog, which breeds right here.

The Scenic Hike: Red Route (3 km)

The perfect choice for those who want to experience the full variety of the forest.

  • Length: 3 km (Loop trail)
  • Time: Approx. 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.
  • Difficulty: Easy. The route runs through gently rolling terrain that most people can manage.
  • Highlights: This route features a wealth of atmospheric marshes and small forest lakes. Although the original timber production is a thing of the past, you can still find various old spruce species along the path. These stand in beautiful contrast to the lush deciduous forest, which includes oak, grey willow, aspen, and ash. You will also cross the historic Præstegårdsplantage (The Pastor's Plantation) along the way.

Practical Information for Your Trip

  • Starting Point & Parking: There is a public car park in the western part of the plantation (accessible via Øster Stendisvej), where both routes begin.
  • Packed Lunch: By the car park, you will find picnic tables and benches – ideal for a cozy break before or after your walk.
  • Dogs: Your four-legged friend is very welcome but must always be kept on a leash to protect the rich wildlife.
  • Facilities: As Ryde Plantage is a raw and untouched natural forest, there are no toilets or rubbish bins. Please remember to take your waste home with you.

Tip: Remember waterproof footwear!

Since the forest contains many low-lying areas, marshes, and small lakes, the paths can be very wet at times. Wellies or good, waterproof hiking boots are recommended for the best experience.
