Håre Marsh
Near Gelsted lies Håre Mose, where a disused gravel pit with small lakes meets a restored bog on nutrient-poor soil. A 2 km path takes you through the area, and extending the walk to Håre Bjerge makes it 5 km through hilly West Funen landscape.
Gravel pit and bog from the Ice Age
You enter from Hårevej, past the veterinary clinic, and suddenly the disused gravel pit lies before you with its small lakes. They formed when gravel was dug here in the 1960s, and today the water lies still between the slopes. Håre Mose itself covers 6.5 hectares and was shaped by meltwater from the Ice Age, when the ice lay heavy over West Funen and the water found its way down from Vissenbjerg, Funen’s highest point.
For 150 years, the water level was lowered by one and a half metres. It has now been raised back to its natural level, and the open areas around the bog have been restored. The soil is nutrient-poor, giving space to plants that don’t thrive elsewhere. You follow the paths through Håre Mose on a walk of just over 2 km, or extend it to 5 km by including Håre Bjerge. The path network in Klakkebjerg connects with the area, so the walk can be extended even further.
Dogs must be kept on a leash, and walking is only permitted on the marked paths, out of consideration for the fragile natural environment.
Tip: Combine the walk with Klakkebjerg and Brænde Ådal for a longer hike through the countryside around Middelfart.
