In the heart of Sorø, in a corner of the historic Academy Park that slopes down towards Lake Sorø, a small and lush gem lies hidden: the Fuchsia Garden (Fuchsiahaven). Here, rows of old fuchsias stand in large terracotta pots, creating an atmospheric space where the hanging blooms in shades of red and pink adorn the gnarled trunks and branches. It is a garden that invites you to slow down – a place to sit on a bench, feel the shade of the wooden pergola and let your gaze wander from flower to flower.

The Fuchsia Garden is part of the Academy Park, the expansive grounds belonging to Sorø Academy and managed by the Sorø Academy Foundation. The park dates all the way back to the Middle Ages, when the area belonged to the monastery, and over the centuries the garden has changed character from a strict monastery garden through French baroque style to today's open, English-inspired parkland with lawns, avenues and free-standing trees. Within this green setting, the Fuchsia Garden forms an intimate, carefully tended corner where the plants grow larger and more striking year after year.

What makes the garden special is the fuchsias themselves. Many of the plants have stood here for generations and have gradually become small, sculptural trees with characterful trunks. Arranged in classic clay pots along the gravel paths, together with agapanthus and other potted plants, they create a lush, almost Mediterranean feel in the middle of this Zealand market town. As you move through the garden, the light shifts between shade beneath the pergola and sun across the open areas, and the many blooms attract bees, butterflies and curious visitors alike.

The Fuchsia Garden is positioned so that a visit can easily be combined with a longer walk through the Academy Park. From here it is only a short distance down to Lake Sorø, where the paths follow the water beneath large old trees and a sense of calm settles in as soon as the sounds of the town disappear behind the foliage. The garden is an obvious stop for anyone who loves gardens, plants and beautiful details, and it fits neatly into a day exploring Sorø's historic town centre with its academy, abbey church and charming streets.

Sorø is known as a green town steeped in cultural history, beautifully set among lakes and forests in the centre of Zealand. With its central location, the town is a good base for experiencing the nature and sights of the area, and you can find inspiration for more tours and experiences across the region at Destination Sjælland. From Sorø, the neighbouring municipalities of Holbæk, Slagelse and Kalundborg are all within easy reach, each offering a wealth of gardens, parks, coastlines and natural areas.

A visit to the Fuchsia Garden is a quiet, sensory experience that reminds us how much beauty can be held in a small space when plants are allowed to grow and are tended with care over many years. Together with the rest of the Academy Park, it forms one of the most beautiful green havens in this part of Zealand – a place you will want to return to.
