An Estate on the Shores of the Isefjord

Eriksholm sits on a headland jutting into the Isefjord between Holbaek and Frederikssund, surrounded by water on three sides and commanding views across the broad expanse of the fjord. The estate traces its origins to the 14th century, when it appears in written records as a small fief, and over the centuries it passed between some of Denmark most influential noble families. Today Eriksholm stands as one of Holbaek Municipality most striking manor landscapes, where the main building, farmyard and parkland form a cohesive whole in the flat coastal terrain.

Architecture and History

The main building at Eriksholm bears the marks of several renovations over time, but the current structure has its roots in the 18th century. Whitewashed walls and a red tile roof are characteristic of Zealand manor houses from the period, and the building sits low in the terrain with direct views over the fjord. An older park with large broadleaf trees surrounds the estate, lending it a calm, almost dreamlike atmosphere, particularly in the early morning hours when mist hangs low over the water.

Eriksholm was owned through history by families such as Bille, Ulfeldt and later Tott, and the estate fortunes followed the great upheavals of Danish manorial history. At various times it served as a significant agricultural operation with extensive landholdings, and the farm buildings still bear witness to the production that shaped this place for centuries.

The Landscape Around Eriksholm

The location on the Isefjord gives Eriksholm a distinctive landscape character. The fjord is broad and open here, and the light shifts constantly with weather and wind. Along the coast you find salt meadows and shallow bays that attract wading birds and ducks, and during migration seasons large flocks of mute swans and greylag geese rest in the fjord. For birdwatchers the area is one of northwest Zealand more overlooked gems.

The hinterland features the typical Zealand moraine landscape of gentle hills, small forests and cultivated fields. Vipperoed and Holbaek both lie within easy reach, and the quiet country roads around the estate lend themselves well to cycling, where you can experience the landscape at a leisurely pace and stop at the many small churches and burial mounds that dot the terrain.

Exploring the Area

Eriksholm is centrally located for some of the best experiences in the Holbaek area. The town of Holbaek, just ten kilometres to the west, offers a charming old harbour, an active cultural scene and the Holbaek Museum, which tells the story of the region Viking age and medieval history. To the east the road leads to Skibby and Jaegerspris, where Jaegerspris Castle and its surrounding forests invite longer walks.

For families with children the area is ideal for combined outings, pairing a manor house visit with a day by the fjord or at one of the many small harbours along the coast. The Isefjord offers good swimming in summer, and its sheltered coves are popular with kayakers and windsurfers. Visit destinationsjaelland.dk for more experiences across the region.

A Fjord Estate with Character

Eriksholm is not a museum or a conventional tourist attraction. It is a working estate still run as a farm, and visitors experience it best from the outside, where the silhouette of the main building against the fjord creates one of Holbaek Municipality most photogenic scenes. The combination of maritime setting, rich history and the quiet, unspoilt landscape makes Eriksholm a place that rewards the curious traveller who takes time to explore Zealand lesser-known corners.
