Route description
On this route you will experience some of the absolute most beautiful Bornholm.
Start in Allinge, a town with old houses and streets, and set off towards Sandvig. If you have good legs that day, go past Hammer Lighthouse on a climb that winds up to the lighthouse on a small and winding Serpentine Road inside a densely overgrown forest. The climb is a dead end, so the bike must be turned around at the top. The view is fantastic, so it is a nice place to catch your breath. And then it is on an almost mountainous descent.
When you have come down the hill at a good speed, the tour continues to Hammerhavn, which was built in 1891 for the shipment of granite from the Hammer Works until 1974.
From the harbor, you cannot avoid seeing Hammershus – Northern Europe’s largest castle ruin and Bornholm’s most visited attraction. The Archbishop of Lund started construction of the castle in the early 13th century. The Hammershus visitor center is hidden in the cliffs, and here you can experience the rustle of history in the exhibition and get a fantastic view of the castle.
Further from Hammershus along Slotslyngvej, with a fantastic view from the ridge over rapeseed fields and the Baltic Sea, you will find Ols Kirke from the end of the 12th century. It is Bornholm’s highest round church, 26 m high.
Then drive along Røvej towards Rø and then down to Bornholm’s Art Museum and the Helligdomsklipperne. Bornholm Art Museum is open all year round, and so are the dramatic Helligdomsklipper cliffs.
Next stop Døndalen, one of Bornholm’s largest and most impressive rift valleys. From the parking lot, follow the valley. Here you will be greeted by one of Denmark’s largest waterfalls, which, however, looks its best in autumn and winter, when there has been a lot of rainfall.
You will then pass through Tejn – once one of Denmark’s largest fishing ports, today home to street food and a microbrewery – and on to the end in Allinge.
