When Art Moves into the Churches

There is something truly special about stepping into one of the old churches of Slagelse Deanery and being greeted by contemporary art amidst the historic surroundings. That is precisely the experience offered by Kunst og Kirker (Art and Churches) every November, when around fifteen churches in and around Slagelse open their doors to professional artists and a curious public.

A Meeting Between Old and New

The concept behind Kunst og Kirker is simple yet powerful: professional visual artists are invited to create works that enter into dialogue with the historic church spaces. Paintings, sculptures and installations find their way in among lime paintings, Gothic vaults and medieval baptismal fonts. The result is a contrast that sharpens the eye for both the art and the architecture. Suddenly you see the church space with fresh eyes, and the artworks gain a resonance they would never have in a white gallery.

Churches with Soul and History

The participating churches range from large town churches like Sankt Peders Kirke and Sankt Mikkels Kirke in Slagelse town centre to small, secluded village churches surrounded by fields and ancient stone walls. Some of the churches contain lime paintings from the Middle Ages, others feature Renaissance interiors or more recent decorations. What they all share is centuries of history, and during the Kunst og Kirker weekend they become the setting for a very different art experience from what you find in the town galleries.

The Artists Behind the Works

Each year around thirty professional artists are selected to participate. They represent a broad spectrum of expressions: abstract painting, figurative sculpture, textile art, ceramics and spatial installations. The artists have the opportunity to visit their assigned church beforehand and create works that relate to the specific space. This gives a site-specific approach that elevates the experience from a traditional exhibition to something more immersive and sensory.

A Weekend Full of Art and Community

Kunst og Kirker takes place on the second weekend of November and typically spans three days. Over the weekend you can visit the churches at your own pace and put together your own route through the deanery. Many choose to drive from church to church, making the trip an all-day experience that combines art with a glimpse into the West Zealand villages. At several of the churches there is also the opportunity to meet the artists and hear about their creative process and the thoughts behind their works.

Location and Accessibility

Slagelse Deanery covers a large area in the heart of West Zealand, and the churches are spread from the town of Slagelse out into the surrounding countryside towards Korsør, Skælskør and Sorø. From Slagelse Station it is a short distance to several of the town churches, while the village churches are best reached by car. Slagelse is about an hour drive from Copenhagen via the motorway and has a direct train connection from the capital.

Experiences in the Area

A visit to Kunst og Kirker can easily be combined with other experiences in the Slagelse area. The Trelleborg Viking Fortress lies just a few kilometres outside town and offers vivid Viking heritage interpretation. Slagelse town centre has a lively high street with cafés and specialist shops, and towards the coast Korsør awaits with harbour culture and fortress history. Nature lovers can take a detour to Skælskør Nor or Borreby Mose for a walk in the flat, open landscape. Discover even more experiences in West Zealand at destinationsjaelland.dk.
