The Upper Town
Højbyen is Kalundborg's medieval town centre with an unchanged street plan from the 13th century, Northern Europe's only five-towered church and ruins of Esbern Snare's fortification. A living quarter with eight centuries of history.

Højbyen in Kalundborg – A Medieval Town That Still Lives
Up on the hill above Kalundborg Fjord lies Højbyen, one of Denmark's best-preserved medieval town quarters. The streets here have not changed their course since the 13th century, and when you walk up the steep lanes from the harbour, you literally step into a townscape that has survived eight centuries. This is not a reconstruction or a museum – it is a living neighbourhood where people reside and work in houses that have stood here for generations.
Vor Frue Kirke – Northern Europe's Only Five-Towered Church
In the centre of Højbyen rises Vor Frue Kirke with its five distinctive towers – four corner towers and a central tower that together form a cross when seen from above. The church was most likely built around 1220 and is entirely unique in Northern European architecture. No one knows with certainty why the builder chose precisely five towers, but theories range from symbolic crusade iconography to practical defence. Whatever the reason, the result is a building that stops every visitor in their tracks. The interior is equally remarkable, with lime paintings, Gothic vaults and an atmosphere shaped by nearly a thousand years of worship.
Esbern Snare's Fortification and Kalundborg Castle
Højbyen's history begins with Esbern Snare, brother to Absalon and one of the most powerful men in 12th-century Denmark. Around 1170, he fortified the western tip of the hill and built the Western Outwork – a strategic outpost controlling the entrance to the fjord. At the eastern end of the hill, Kalundborg Castle was built in the 14th century, possibly by Valdemar Atterdag after he captured the town in 1344. The ruins of the castle can still be seen in the Ruin Park, where the foundations trace the outline of a power centre that controlled West Zealand's trade and defence for centuries.
The Streets and Houses
It is Højbyen's street plan that makes it exceptional in a Danish context. Adelgade, Munkesøgade and Præstegade follow precisely the routes laid out in the Middle Ages, and many of the houses along them date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The half-timbered buildings with their crooked walls and low doorways give the quarter an intimacy that modern town planning rarely achieves. The Bishop's Residence near the church is one of the town's oldest secular buildings and today functions as part of the museum area. In the same quarter you find the birthplace of Sigrid Undset – the Norwegian Nobel Prize laureate in literature was born right here in 1882.
Museum and Ruin Park
Kalundborg Museum in Højbyen tells the story of the town and its surroundings from prehistory to modern times. The museum is part of Museum Vestsjælland and holds archaeological finds from excavations in the area as well as exhibitions on the town's role as a trading and garrison town. The adjacent Ruin Park gives a physical sense of the castle's scale – here you can walk among the excavated foundations and imagine how the fortress once dominated the hilltop. For families with children, it is an ideal place to combine play and learning, and the information boards make it easy to understand the context even without a guide.
Højbyen Today
Although Højbyen is a historic quarter, it is far from dusty. The area houses small galleries, workshops and cultural events that draw visitors up the hill throughout the year. From the highest points there are views over Kalundborg Fjord and the surrounding landscape – a view that Esbern Snare undoubtedly also enjoyed, albeit for more strategic reasons. The combination of authentic medieval architecture, a living local community and the dramatic hilltop setting makes Højbyen something quite rare in Denmark.
Experiences in the Kalundborg Area
Kalundborg has much more to offer than Højbyen. The harbour area below the hill has been modernised with cafés and shops, and Gisseløre to the north is a popular outdoor area with bathing beach and views. The Røsnæs peninsula west of town offers some of Zealand's most dramatic coastal landscapes with steep cliffs and wild nature. For those wanting to explore more of West Zealand, Kalundborg is a fine base – Lake Tissø and Fugledegård Nature Centre lie to the south, and the entire West Zealand coast is within reach.
