Troll Ebbe Skytte in Knivholt Forest, Frederikshavn - by artist Thomas Dambo
Find the giant wooden troll in the forest by Knivholt Manor and wander along quiet paths between tall trees. Ebbe Skytte was created by artist Thomas Dambo from recycled wood and hides a short forest walk from the manor buildings.
Art in nature – a troll adventure for all ages
Ebbe Skytte is one of Thomas Dambo’s large, hand-built trolls: sculptures crafted from reclaimed wood that invite play, reflection and simple encounters with nature. In Frederikshavn the troll stands in Knivholt Forest, a calm woodland beside the manor grounds. Built from pallet wood, offcuts and other recycled materials, the figure blends into the trees and sparks curiosity. The name connects to the island landscape off Frederikshavn, which forms part of the artist’s storytelling universe.
How to find the troll in Knivholt Forest
Park at Knivholt Manor and follow the marked forest paths. Walk through the courtyard and continue roughly 800 metres north/northeast. After a distinct bend and a small ditch crossing, the path curves and the troll appears between the trees. The surface is typical forest trail with mostly even stretches; regular trainers or light hiking shoes work well. On wet days the ground can be soft.
Sustainable sculpture – built from recycled wood
Like Dambo’s other trolls, Ebbe Skytte is made from reclaimed materials. The sculpture is sturdy but needs gentle treatment: look, take photos and let your imagination roam – but please avoid climbing, so the figure can be enjoyed for many years.
Knivholt Manor and forest walks
Knivholt is a popular local excursion spot with events through the year and several well-defined trails in the surrounding woodland. Combine your troll hunt with a peaceful walk or a visit to the manor courtyard, where there is often activity. Families will find the route manageable, and there are natural places to pause on benches and large stones along the way.
