The Redoubt at Fiskerhus on Røsnæs — coastal defence with views across the Great Belt

Out on Røsnæs, where the peninsula narrows and the chalk cliffs meet the currents of the Great Belt, the Redoubt at Fiskerhus stands as a well-preserved reminder of Denmark's coastal defences. The redoubt — an earthwork with an associated battery position — was built to protect the waters near Kalundborg against enemy ships. The placement is strategically inspired: from the redoubt's position, one has an unobstructed view across the shipping lane between Zealand and Funen, and on clear days the gaze reaches Samsø and the north coast of Funen.

Today, the earthworks remain clearly readable in the landscape. The low ramparts trace the outlines of the old defensive position, and it takes little imagination to picture the placement of cannons with their muzzles pointed seaward. The redoubt lies by the small fishing hamlet of Fiskerhus, one of the most remote spots on Røsnæs, where only birds and wind break the silence.

Røsnæs — dramatic nature and wild coastline

Røsnæs is Zealand's westernmost point and one of the most striking natural areas in Kalundborg Municipality. The peninsula was shaped by the Ice Age and is characterised by chalk cliffs, dry grasslands and a wind-exposed coastline that changes character from season to season. The Redoubt at Fiskerhus lies in the western part of the peninsula, where the terrain is open and undulating, with views that on good days stretch to the Mols Hills and the hilly silhouette of Samsø.

The nature around Fiskerhus is rich in wildflowers and rare insects. The grasslands bloom from May with orchids, thyme and harebells, and butterflies thrive in the warm microclimate along south-facing slopes. The bird migrations in spring and autumn are spectacular, and raptors such as common buzzard and kestrel regularly hunt across the open landscape.

Visiting the Redoubt at Fiskerhus

The redoubt is freely accessible year-round and is reached via Røsnæsvej, which runs along the spine of the peninsula. From the road it is a short walk down to Fiskerhus and the earthworks. The terrain is uneven and without paths, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Dogs are welcome on leads. The site appeals primarily to adults with an interest in military history and coastal landscapes — it is a place for quiet contemplation and wide-open views rather than active recreation.

The redoubt is close to several other attractions on Røsnæs. Combine your visit with Skanseskoven to the east, Vågehøj with its panoramic views, or a walk along the cliffs towards Røsnæs Lighthouse at the very tip of the peninsula. Røsnæs offers some of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in eastern Denmark.
