The Dolmen at Faurbo
Near Faurbo north of Kalundborg stands a well-preserved Neolithic dolmen, bearing witness to the early farming communities of West Zealand. The monument sits in a hilly moraine landscape overlooking the countryside — a quiet encounter with five millennia of history.

A Stone Age monument in the West Zealand landscape
In the hilly terrain near Faurbo, north of the town of Kalundborg, stands a well-preserved dolmen from the Neolithic period. The dolmen at Faurbo is one of many prehistoric burial monuments that testify to the early settlement of Kalundborg Municipality, standing as a quiet memorial to the people who shaped this landscape thousands of years ago.
The construction and age of the dolmen
The dolmen dates from the late Neolithic period, around 3500-3000 BC, when the first farming communities in Denmark began erecting monumental stone graves. The structure consists of large supporting stones bearing a capstone — a building technique that required considerable organisation and cooperation in the early farming society. That these stones still stand after more than five millennia is testimony to the craftsmanship of the ancient builders and the care shown towards the monument through the generations.
The landscape around Faurbo
The Faurbo area lies in a hilly moraine landscape overlooking the West Zealand cultural landscape. The terrain was shaped by Ice Age glaciers, which left behind the large boulders that prehistoric people later used to build their graves. Today, the surroundings are characterised by cultivated fields, hedgerows, and scattered farmsteads — a tranquil and authentic Danish agricultural landscape that has retained much of its original character. From here, it is only a few kilometres to Kalundborg Fjord and the open waters of the Great Belt.
Part of a larger cultural landscape
The dolmen at Faurbo is just one of many ancient monuments in Kalundborg Municipality that together paint a picture of a densely populated area in prehistory. Along the West Zealand ridges and coasts, you will find numerous burial mounds, passage graves, and other stone settings from the Stone and Bronze Ages.
