Sønderherreds Plantage – forest, hills and quiet nature experiences in Sydmors
In the heart of Sydmors, Sønderherreds Plantage spreads out as the island's largest continuous woodland area.
Here gentle hills, open landscapes and dense woodland come together in a nature shaped by both the Ice Age and human hands.
The area offers some of the most peaceful and varied nature experiences by the Limfjord – perfect for those seeking stillness, views and active outdoor life.
A landscape shaped by time and change
The landscape of Sydmors has its roots in both the period of land redistribution and the extensive planting of heathland in the 19th century. This is where Sønderherreds Plantage emerged, today covering approximately 350 hectares.
The area is characterised by gentle hills and valleys, with several sections bearing the character of a dead ice landscape. The terrain reaches above 60 metres and offers fine views across the southern part of Mors.
Between the fields lie living hedgerows, which underline the simple and peaceful expression of the landscape.
Forest, marshes and burial mounds
In contrast to the open landscape, the plantation forms an enclosed and quiet space.
Here you'll find small marshes, particularly in the south-eastern section, as well as dead ice hollows with rare habitat types. The area also contains over 40 burial mounds, many of which lie in and around the forest – a clear trace of life in the past.
Stillness, calm and outdoor life
Sønderherreds Plantage is a place where the pace slows.
Here there is room for walks, a deeper understanding of nature and quiet contemplation. It is nature's own terms that set the agenda – and that is precisely what makes the area special.
Experiences and activities
The area offers several opportunities for active outdoor life:
- Hjertestien – a marked walking route through the plantation
- Sindbjerg MTB – mountain bike trails with both easy and technical routes
- A dog woodland adjoining the area
The MTB trail consists of a base route of approximately 3.5 km, with the option of additional loops at higher difficulty levels. In total the route can be extended to approximately 9.5 km and is suitable for both beginners and more experienced riders.
Important information!
