The Jyllinge Loop
The Jyllinge Loop is a cycling route through historic landscapes, peaceful nature and bird-rich wetlands. Along the way, you'll pass sights such as Gundsømagle Lake, ancient burial sites and unique churches – all close to Roskilde Fjord.
The route is approximately 22 km long and offers varied terrain, where you can experience both cultural landmarks and peaceful natural surroundings. It’s a great opportunity to combine physical activity with relaxing breaks at birdwatching towers or charming local spots.
Cycling through historic landscapes
As you cycle along, you’ll pass ancient burial mounds, silent witnesses to life and death thousands of years ago. You’ll also enjoy views across Roskilde Fjord towards the narrow stretch called “Peberrenden”. Around the year 1040, five Viking ships – known as the Skuldelev ships – were deliberately sunk here to create a naval blockade. These ships were excavated in 1962 and can now be admired at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde.
Discover Gundsømagle: A natural gem of reeds and birds
Be sure to stop by Gundsømagle Lake and Nature Reserve, where a 300-metre-long boardwalk leads you into Eastern Denmark’s largest reed forest. The jungle-like setting may remind you of the Amazon – a true birdwatcher’s paradise. Along the path, there are benches where you can rest and enjoy the wildlife all around you. The route to the reeds takes you along a forest trail lined with gnarled trees, with plenty of chances to spot birds, frogs, and native plants. Climb one of the bird towers for a panoramic view of the area – you might even catch sight of a bearded tit, a grey heron, or a marsh harrier.
Culture and history
Continuing the journey, you pass Kirkerup Church, where you can stop and see extraordinary medieval murals from the 13th century, depicting rare scenes from both the Old and New Testament.
The return to Jyllinge takes you through the historic landscape of Gundsømagle. Here, the impressive Hødysse long barrow is one of the most prominent ancient monuments in the area, clearly visible just east of the town of Gundsømagle.
Once back in Jyllinge, why not celebrate the 22 km in the saddle? The southern end of Jyllinge Marina is a lovely spot to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the view of Eskilsø – a small island in Roskilde Fjord, known for its scenic setting and medieval monastery ruins.
