Hammer shelter site
Enjoy an atmospheric overnight stay in modern, Viking-inspired shelters with the fjord right on your doorstep and nature all around you.

Overnight stay by the fjord in the Skjoldungernes Land National Park
At Hammer Shelter Site, you will find two architect-designed Skjoldung shelters, each accommodating up to four people.
The shelters are named Hugin, located to the west, and Munin, located to the east, and are shaped like the prow of a Viking ship – inspired by the national park’s legendary past and the area’s close connection to the fjord, seafaring, and Viking history.
The location right by the water creates a special sense of calm and offers beautiful views across the fjord landscape.
A different and comfortable shelter experience
The shelters differ significantly from traditional shelters. Inside, the space is cave-like and slightly uneven, creating an intimate and sheltered atmosphere – almost like a tipi. At the narrow end, there is standing height, making it easy to change clothes, and along the sides there are ground-level shutters that can be closed for greater privacy or opened as needed.
The flexible shutters allow you to lie inside the shelters with direct views of nature, the fjord, and the star-filled sky. At the same time, they provide protection from wind, rain, and smoke from the campfire, significantly extending the shelter season. With a good sleeping bag, overnight stays are possible for much of the year, regardless of weather conditions.
Social time around the campfire
At the wide end of the shelter, facing the campfire area, a fixed ship-style bench has been installed, with seating for up to five people. This provides excellent opportunities for shared cooking, relaxation, and spending time together. The benches can be folded up, allowing you to enjoy the fire and the atmosphere of the site directly from inside the shelter – a solution that supports both togetherness and quiet reflection.
Facilities and practical information
The shelter site is located just north of Østby Jollehavn, where parking is available. Facilities on site include a campfire area, benches, a toilet with water, drinking water, and a viewpoint. Everyone is welcome to visit the area, even without staying overnight, and local stories are shared on site through images and storytelling.
Overnight stays in the shelters are free of charge but must be booked in advance. Please bring your own firewood or purchase firewood at Østby Harbour by prior arrangement with the harbour master.
The shelter site is part of the Skjoldungernes Land National Park and is used for outdoor recreation, outdoor education programmes, and organised events.
