Machinery at the historic gunpowder works
The guided tour explores the historic gunpowder works with a particular focus on the machinery once used to produce black powder. Several of these historic machines are still in working order today.
Waterpower was essential to early production. It was later supplemented by other sources of power, and the tour includes waterwheels, the water turbine and historic electric motors.
More than 200 years of gunpowder production
Black powder was produced at the gunpowder works for more than 200 years for the defence of the Danish realm. In the mid-18th century, production depended on water from the canal to power mills, stampers and rollers used to process sulphur, saltpetre and charcoal into black powder.
Over time, new machinery and sources of power were introduced. Steam and, later, electricity supplemented the less predictable waterpower, helping to make production more efficient and improve safety.

After the guided tour, visitors can continue exploring KRUDT independently and discover more traces of its historic gunpowder production. The visit can also continue at the Arsenal, where the story of Frederiksværk’s industrial heritage unfolds further.
