The Northern Route on Langeland – a cycling holiday featuring the coast, nature and local flavours

Self-guided cycle tour of Northern Langeland

The Northern Route on Langeland is a self-guided cycling experience organised by Sydfyns Cykeludlejning, where you follow the national cycle route network through some of Northern Langeland’s beautiful countryside. The route combines coastal stretches, scenic views, narrow roads, historic sites and local stops along the way. The tour is ideal for those who want to explore Langeland at their own pace. You can take breaks, follow the suggested pit stops and let the day unfold according to the weather, your energy levels and your desire for little detours. The route has been developed as a Geopark Signature Experience within the UNESCO Global Geopark ‘The South Funen Archipelago’.

For those who want to experience more than just the cycle path

On the trip, you’ll pass by or come close to farm shops, local culinary experiences, Tranekær, Lejbølle, Dageløkke Harbour and scenic areas near Botofte. The route consists mainly of cycle-friendly roads and is described as particularly well-suited to e-bikes, though it can also be cycled on a standard bike. The Northern Route on Langeland is ideal for holidaymakers who wish to combine an active holiday in Denmark with tranquillity, nature and little experiences along the way. You set the pace yourself – and that’s precisely what makes the route so enjoyable for couples, friends and families with children who are used to cycling.

Nearby attractions

Do allow time for a detour to Tranekær, where the castle town offers cultural history, Tranekær Castle Mill and art experiences amidst the greenery. In the area around North Langeland, you can also experience coastal nature, small harbour villages and the characteristic Langeland landscapes with their ‘hat-shaped’ hills and panoramic views. Dageløkke Harbour, Åsø Beach and the area around Botofte are great stops if you want to enjoy the sea and the peaceful island atmosphere. Langeland and Strynø form part of the UNESCO Global Geopark ‘The South Funen Archipelago’, where the landscape tells the story of the Ice Age, rising sea levels and the unique archipelago ecosystems.

What’s included in the cycling package?

When you book the Nordruten on Langeland with Sydfyns Cykeludlejning, you’ll receive a comprehensive cycling package that makes it easy to set off on your own. The package includes bike hire, a tested route based on the new cycle point network, maps and introductory descriptions, a goodie bag for the route, and a meal voucher that can be used for food and drink at selected eateries on Langeland.

Practical information

The Nordruten on Langeland is a longer circular cycle route starting and ending in Rudkøbing. The cycle package and e-bikes must be collected from Sydfyns Cykeludlejning, Frederiksø 1A, 5700 Svendborg. From here, the trip can be combined with cycling on to Langeland, or you can arrange your own transport to Rudkøbing, where the circular route itself begins. The route follows the cycle point network, so you navigate from point to point along the way. The tour is best suited to guests in generally good physical condition, and an e-bike can be a good option if you’d like a more relaxed day’s cycling.

The tour can be booked from 7 July up to and including 31 October
